RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The associations between genetic factors and waist circumference (WC) with stroke risk have been evaluated in Western studies. However, evidence of this association has rarely been reported in the Chinese population. This study aimed to evaluate the association between WC and family history of stroke (FHS) with ischemic stroke (IS) risk among Chinese adults and to further explore the potential interaction of these associations. METHODS AND RESULTS: The China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) study recruited 35,508 participants aged 30-79 years from the Qingdao urban area during 2004-2008. A total of 33,355 participants were included in study. Cox regression analysis was used to estimate the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the independent and interactional associations between FHS and WC and IS risk. Participants with FHS had a 29% (HR = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.12-1.50) higher IS risk than those without FHS. Participants with excessive WC (85 cm for males and 80 cm for females) had a 78% (HR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.51-2.10) higher IS risk than those with normal WC. The combined effect of FHS and excessive WC on IS was statistically significant (HR = 2.29, 95% CI: 1.84-2.86). The present study further found statistically significant multiplicative interactions of FHS and WC with IS risk (Pinteraction < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The present study indicated that FHS and WC were significantly associated with an increased risk of IS. The association between FHS and IS was associated with excessive WC.

BACKGROUND: Little comprehensive information on overall epidemic trend of notifiable respiratory infectious diseases is available in Shandong Province, China. This study aimed to determine the spatiotemporal distribution and epidemic characteristics of notifiable respiratory infectious diseases. METHODS: Time series was firstly performed to describe the temporal distribution feature of notifiable respiratory infectious diseases during 2005-2014 in Shandong Province. GIS Natural Breaks (Jenks) was applied to divide the average annual incidence of notifiable respiratory infectious diseases into five grades. Spatial empirical Bayesian smoothed risk maps and excess risk maps were further used to investigate spatial patterns of notifiable respiratory infectious diseases. Global and local Moran's I statistics were used to measure the spatial autocorrelation. Spatial-temporal scanning was used to detect spatiotemporal clusters and identify high-risk locations. RESULTS: A total of 537,506 cases of notifiable respiratory infectious diseases were reported in Shandong Province during 2005-2014. The morbidity of notifiable respiratory infectious diseases had obvious seasonality with high morbidity in winter and spring. Local Moran's I analysis showed that there were 5, 23, 24, 4, 20, 8, 14, 10 and 7 high-risk counties determined for influenza A (H1N1), measles, tuberculosis, meningococcal meningitis, pertussis, scarlet fever, influenza, mumps and rubella, respectively. The spatial-temporal clustering analysis determined that the most likely cluster of influenza A (H1N1), measles, tuberculosis, meningococcal meningitis, pertussis, scarlet fever, influenza, mumps and rubella included 74, 66, 58, 56, 22, 64, 2, 75 and 56 counties, and the time frame was November 2009, March 2008, January 2007, February 2005, July 2007, December 2011, November 2009, June 2012 and May 2005, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There were obvious spatiotemporal clusters of notifiable respiratory infectious diseases in Shandong during 2005-2014. More attention should be paid to the epidemiological and spatiotemporal characteristics of notifiable respiratory infectious diseases to establish new strategies for its control.

RESUMO

Cochliomycin G (1), a new 14-membered resorcylic acid lactone, together with six known analogues (2-7), was isolated from the culture broth of a marine-derived fungus Cochliobolus lunatus. The planar structure of 1 was established by extensive NMR spectroscopy, and the absolute configuration was elucidated by the combination of empirical rules, CD data, and 13C chemical shift calculations. Compound 1 exhibited potent antifouling activity against Chlorella vulgaris, Chaetoceros socialis, and Navicula exigua, with EC50 values of 1.09, 0.92, and 0.61 µg/mL, respectively.

RESUMO

In 2015, we evaluated 221 patients with undifferentiated fever and tick bite or animal exposure in Xinyang, China, for Rickettsia infection. Three with mild disease were infected with Candidatus R. xinyangensis, which clustered with R. fournieri and R. vini in phylogenetic analyses. Field investigations suggest Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks might be involved in transmission.

RESUMO

Three new diketopiperazine alkaloids, including two oxepine-containing diketopiperazines, chrysopiperazines A and B (1 and 2), and one quinazoline-containing diketopiperazine, chrysopiperazine C (5), together with three known analogues (3, 4, and 6), were isolated from the gorgonian-derived Penicillium chrysogenum fungus. The relative and absolute configurations of C-3 and C-15 in 1 and 2, C-3 and C-14 in 5 were established by NOE modified Marfey's analysis and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. Particularly, the absolute configurations of C-19 in 1 and 3, which was very challenging to be identified due to the flexible conformation in a short aliphatic chain, were successfully determined by the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) method, supplying with a reliable and optional method to define the absolute configurations. Additionally, this is the first report on oxepine-containing diketopiperazines from the genus Penicillium.

Because of the different crystallization behaviors of semicrystalline supramolecular polymers (SMPs) from conventional polymers, investigation on the unique crystallization kinetics and crystalline structures of SMPs is of fundamental importance to tune their physical properties and functions in processing. Herein, we chose the multiple hydrogen-bonding 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) group as the supramolecular unit and poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) as the polymorphic polymer block, and synthesized UPy-functionalized PBAs (i.e., UPy-bonded supramolecular PBAs). The crystallization kinetics, polymorphic crystalline structure, phase transition, and lamellar morphology of the UPy-functionalized PBAs were investigated and compared with those of the pristine PBA. UPy end functionalization suppressed the crystallization rate and crystallinity of the linked PBA chains. Compared to the pristine PBA, the UPy-functionalized PBAs preferred to form the thermally-stable α crystals at the same temperature; this was more obvious for the samples with a high content of the UPy end group. The facilitated formation of α crystals in the UPy-functionalized PBAs was attributed to the decreased equilibrium melting temperature. UPy end functionalization also decreased the critical temperature and broadened the temperature range for the ß-to-α phase transition of PBA during heating. Due to the segregation of the UPy unit in the amorphous phase, the UPy-functionalized PBAs exhibited larger long periods than the pristine PBA, even though they had a lower degree of crystallinity.

Promoting the stereocomplexation ability of high-molecular-weight poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA) is an efficient way to improve the thermal resistance of the resulting materials. Herein, we studied the competing crystallization kinetics, polymorphic crystalline structure, and lamellae structure of the PLLA/PDLA component in its miscible blends with poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and proposed a method to improve the stereocomplexation ability of PLLA and PDLA through miscible blending with the other polymer. Crystallization of the PLLA/PDLA component is suppressed after the addition of PVAc, due to the dilution effect. The stereocomplexation ability of PLLA and PDLA is enhanced by blending with PVAc; this becomes more obvious at a high PVAc content (≥50 wt %) but less significant with the further increase of PLLA, PDLA molecular weights. Almost exclusive formation of SCs is achieved for PLLA and PDLA after blending with a large proportion of PVAc (e.g., 75 wt %). Incorporation of PVAc also facilitates the HC-to-SC structural reorganization upon heating. The increased chain mobility, decreased equilibrium melting point, and enhanced intermolecular interactions may account for the preferential stereocomplexation in PLLA/PDLA/PVAc blends.
